Dust Hazard Analysis FAQs

“A DHA is a careful review of the fire and explosion hazards to determine the consequences of what could go wrong and to determine what safeguards could be implemented to prevent or mitigate those consequences.” (NFPA 652 – 7.1.1.3)
“This standard shall apply to all facilities and operations that manufacture, process, blend, convey, repackage, generate, or handle combustible dusts or combustible particulate solids.” (NFPA 652 – 1.3.2)
“Test results, historical data, and published data shall be documented and, when requested, provided to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).” (NFPA 652 – 5.2.2)
“The absence of previous incidents shall not be used as the basis for deeming a particulate to not be combustible or explosible.” (NFPA 652 – 5.2.3)
“The absence of previous incidents shall not be used as the basis for not performing a DHA.” (NFPA 652 – 7.1.3)
“The DHA shall be reviewed and updated at least every 5 years.” (NFPA 652 – 7.1.4)
Also, any equipment additions or process modifications are required to be reviewed through a DHA.
